HOW TO: Make Homemade Hamburger Helper-Bacon Cheeseburger

Hamburger Helper is one of those food items I cringe when I am asked about. There is something both wonderful and terrible about this highly recognized package meal. Having children of a older nature in the house, we have begun to see a trend of "hey did you know mac n' cheese comes in a box"..and various similar discussions after visits with friends. So in my effort to go with the flow, I recently figured out how to make Hamburger Helper in my kitchen without the box and tastes buds did not know the difference!

Full time 30-40 minutes
Serves 4

The needs-

1 lb. ground turkey (or beef)
4 oz. cheddar cheese, cubed
2 cups elbow macaroni, uncooked
1 cup heavy cream
1 cup milk
1/2 cup real bacon bits or shredded bacon
1 tbsp flour
1/2 tbsp onion powder
1/2 tbsp garlic powder
1 tsp salt
1 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp chili powder

The know-

In a large deep brown ground meat evenly over medium-high heat.

Once browned add in onion powder, garlic powder, salt, pepper, and chili powder. Stirring to evenly mix and season meat.

Make a small space in center of pan and add in the flour, stir it into the juices in pan allowing it to brown.

Slowly incorporate heavy cream whisking well.

Add in cubed cheddar and allow it to melt into cream, stir gently but constantly.

Add in bacon and stir well.

Allow cheese to come to a gentle boil/bubble along the edges of pan.

Add in macaroni and milk. Lower heat to a low-simmer, cover and cook for 6-8 minutes or until pasta is tender and has absorbed all the milk in the pan.
